Summertime is upon us. Unfortunately, this means that most of the Atlantic and Caribbean is dead flat with hurricane season two months away from getting truly hot. As if thats not enough, the great Pacific north swells are now officially napping, so its the time of the year when wave riders must set their sites on other shores. For those of you who are new to this yearly migration, lets run through the best areas to surf in the summertime.
Most of the action is taking place in the Pacific and Indian oceans this time of year with the general flow of swells from the South (as opposed to the winter flow from the cold northern hemisphere storms). That means that the entire west coast of Central and South America is ripe for the picking.
Costa Rica is by far the most popular summertime surf destination of late, providing very consistent small to mid size surf all season. The atmosphere is hospitable, meaning the locals are cool and the food is safe. Costa Rica is a fine family destination.
Mexicooffers much larger and sometimes quite dangerous wave conditions with an edgier atmosphere for a novice traveler. Puerto Escondito near Oaxaca has clean lodging and also some non-surf activities to offer, but there are endless great waves up and down the Mexican coastline for the more adventurous wave seeker.
